
The development of graduate education in foreign languages at Southeast University:
In 1994, the university first enrolled students in the master’s program in Curriculum and Teaching Methodology.
In 1998, the master’s program in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics was approved.
In 2004, the master’s programs in English Language and Literature and Japanese Language and Literature were approved.
In 2010, Southeast University obtained authorization to confer master’s degrees in the First-level Discipline of Foreign Languages and Literatures. In the same year, the Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) professional degree program was approved.
In 2012, the first Sino-Foreign Joint Dual Master’s Degree Program (Translation and Interpreting) was approved by the Ministry of Education.
In 2017, the master’s program in Russian Language and Literature was established.
In 2020, the university was granted authorization to confer doctoral degrees in the First-level Discipline of Foreign Languages and Literatures. In the same year, the master’s program in Japanese Translation (professional degree program) was established.
In 2021, the master’s program in Spanish Language and Literature was approved.
In 2023, the Postdoctoral Research Station for Foreign Languages and Literatures was established.
At the Master’s level, the School of Foreign Languages at Southeast University offers 7 programs, including Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature, English Translation, and Japanese Translation.
At the doctoral level, graduate education centers on four core areas: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Foreign Literature, Translation Studies, and International and Regional Studies. The program is committed to nurturing foreign language leaders with international perspectives and solid academic foundations.
To date, the School possesses a high-calibre faculty team consisting of 77 Master’s supervisors and 25 Doctoral supervisors. They have achieved remarkable accomplishments in fields such as Foreign Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Foreign Literature, Translation Studies, and International and Regional Studies, providing strong support and guarantee for the academic growth and career development of graduate students.
The School has achieved significant results in the internationalization of graduate education. In the past three years, 14 graduate students have received funding from the China Scholarship Council (CSC) to study abroad at world-renowned universities such as the University of Warwick, the University of Auckland, and the University of Tokyo. Additionally, 28 graduates have participated in short-term exchange programs at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Aichi Institute of Technology, while 11 students have joined overseas exchange programs. Nearly 30 students have taken part in talent cultivation programs offered by international organizations, and dozens of students have undertaken internships at international organizations such as UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP, and UNRCO.
With sustained dedication and steady progress, the School’s graduate students have also achieved remarkable results in research innovation. In the past three years, more than 20 graduate research and practice innovation programs at the provincial and ministerial levels have been approved. Doctoral students, as first authors, have published more than 20 academic papers in leading domestic and international journals indexed in SSCI, A&HCI, and CSSCI. They have participated in domestic and international academic conferences more than 200 times and delivered over 150 presentations.
Looking ahead, the School of Foreign Languages at Southeast University will continue to uphold the educational philosophy of openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation. We will further strengthen cooperation and exchange with domestic and international universities and research institutions, jointly promoting the prosperous development of foreign language and literature education and research, and contributing to the cultivation of more foreign language leaders with international vision and solid academic foundations.
